Remember

The kindness of Jesus is overwhelming. He never allowed the disdain and cynicism of others affect His heart towards them; and He did not try to retaliate or fight against those who betrayed, hated and wanted to kill Him.

1 Corinthians 11:23 says:

โ€œon the night when He was betrayed took bread,
and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said,
‘This is My body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.โ€™โ€

Amidst betrayal, contention, deep hurt and agony over the pain that was before Him โ€”Jesus demonstrated love. On the nigh He was betrayed He served by washing His disciplesโ€™ feet and giving them communion, a symbol of how He would sacrifice His life on the cross for them. He gave thanks and He said โ€œthis is My body which is for you.โ€ย  He was not thinking of Himself, He was serving others.

Throughout His ministry Jesus’ disciples were confused when He would say: โ€˜My hour has not yet comeโ€™ or โ€˜the Son of Man will be betrayed but on the third day will rise again.โ€™ ย But Jesus knew His disciples would look back at this night, remember Jesusโ€™ example, His death and His resurrection and it would finally make sense. ย The disciples would finally understand that the purpose of Jesusโ€™ life and ministry was to bring salvation, peace, and reconciliation to lost and hurting people who were in need of a Savior.

And all Jesus asks is that they remember Him.

Simply remember.ย  And He asks me to do the same.ย  It is easy for me to forget and become busy in my daily routine, waste time scrolling through social media, so consumed with the noise that I become restless and can no longer rest in the stillnessโ€ฆ ย and when I find myself discouraged, backsliding, or doubtful it means that I have forgotten Him: who He is and all that He means to me.ย  I need to remember: His kindness, faithfulness and compassion; all the ways Heโ€™s provided and cared for Me. ย I must be watchful and careful to not be distracted but instead to fix my eyes on Him

On a night that was confusing and chaotic to His disciples and onlookers, when it seemed as though evil had won and injustice had the final word, Godโ€™s purpose was being fulfilled and Jesus had His eyes on His Father, submitting to His will.ย  When you cannot make sense of all that is going on around youโ€”look to Jesus, remember Him, and rest knowing that He is in control and His purpose is being accomplished even when all else seems contrary.

Oh what a Savior! Isnโ€™t He wonderful!?

Loved.

โ€œWe love because He first loved us.โ€

– 1 John 4:19

Thereโ€™s something captivating about watching a child react to and experience life.ย  The way they freely dance, sing, laugh, and cry without a worry of who is watching or what others are thinking.ย  Thereโ€™s purity and innocence in the way they love and interact with others.ย  Do you remember feeling that way?ย  Do you remember when that changed?

I remember: suddenly worrying about what others were thinking, realizing what they were wearing, how they were acting, and the attention they were getting. I realized life isnโ€™t as simple as I once imagined, not all people are kind and their words do not all come with good intentions.ย  I felt insecure for the first time; like I was not enough and had to change to be accepted and worth knowing.ย  Looking back I realize how vulnerable I was because I didnโ€™t personally know the security of Jesusโ€™ love.

I remember feeling lonely and left out, young and unsure of who I was; thinking:ย โ€œIf only I was smarter, prettier, funnier, cooler, more likable…โ€ If you are thinking like that today God is pursuing you and wants you to know that you are precious in His eyes and He bottles every tear you cry (Psalm 56:8). He is not like those who have hurt you, abandoned you, or made you feel unaccepted and unloved. ย This is not the superficial love we hear about in songs or see portrayed in movies.

You are valued and loved with an unchanging, faithful, grounding love; so powerful that His voice spoke the world into existence and with the same breath created you.

I wish you would walk so closely with this Love that it effects every word you say, the places you go, the way you treat others and view yourself.ย  You do not have to worry about being loved and accepted, because you already are.ย  Concern yourself and occupy your mind with the thoughts Jesus has towards you. Place your confidence in Him, not in othersโ€™ ever-changing opinions.ย  Donโ€™t let others define who youโ€™re supposed to be or how youโ€™re supposed to look and act.

Today I pray that you settle in your soul to believe who God says you are; donโ€™t change and try to fit in. The world says we need to love ourselves while our real need is to know that we are loved.ย  Like a child that so confidently trusts in their parents’ love; we can rest confident and secure in Jesusโ€™ love for us.

โ€œYou are not an afterthought.
Love Himself dreamed you up.โ€

Press On.

โ€œOne thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,ย I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.โ€ – Phil 3.13-14

Is there something in your past that isย making it hard for you to look ahead? Have you ever had to walk away from something and it felt like you were leaving pieces of your heart behind?

In this verse Paul says he had to forget what was behind and strain toward what was ahead.ย  He had to press on. ย There were things in Paulโ€™s life that were pressing against him and it took everything inside him to keep going.

Sometimes everything in life seems to want to push you back and reverse any progress you’ve made. This word โ€œPRESSโ€ means to run after, to seek after eagerly, and earnestly endeavor to acquire. To press requires constant pressure and focus in oneโ€™s heart and mind.ย  Whatย are we to be pressing toward?ย  The goal. The prize. Jesus. The One who has called us and filled us with His Spirit because it is His power in us that gives us the ability to press on.ย  Ephesians 3:16 says โ€œthat He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man.โ€

Are you tired of the straining and pressing?ย  Are you worn out? Exhausted? Are you questioning if it is even worth it to keep going?ย  I have been there, I know how that feels.ย  But God never intended us to be alone or to use our strength to endure.ย  He is our strength and it is only by His Spirit that we have the power to continue.

You are free to be weak because He is strong.ย  Walk and live in His strength today.ย  No matter what is pressing against you Jesus has the victory, He is stronger.

When everything is pressing against you, press into Him. The goal is not to be busy, to be more active in ministry, or to appear spiritual.ย  Exhaustion comes when we forget that He is all we need. He is the Prize and the Goal.

Remember Jesus in all you do and press on to know Him more.

โ€œSo let us know and
become personally acquainted with Him;
let us press on to know and
understand fully the greatness of the Lord

to honor, heed, and deeply cherish Him.โ€

– Hosea 6.3 AMP

What to do with Doubt

Have you ever been in a place where you feel like God is being unfair or withholding something good from you?

In the Genesis 2:16-17 God told Adam and Eve: โ€œYou shall eat of every tree in the garden but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat.โ€ย  Then, in chapter 3 the serpent lies to Eve saying: โ€œHas God surely said that you shall not eat of every tree in the garden?โ€ ย The devil causes Eve to focus on what God had prohibited and ignore all God had given. The devil causes her to doubt her good and loving Father and to believe God was unfair and holding back something good from her.

Like Eve, how frequently does the enemyโ€™s voice cause me to doubt Godโ€™s voice?

The doubt sounds like this: โ€œJesus told me that He is all I need but I feel like I am in need. I know Jesus loves me, but I donโ€™t feel it. Heโ€™s told me Heโ€™s my Husband, but I feel lonely. He’s told me He’s my provider but I want (fill in the blank).โ€

Have you ever felt like that? I have. And if you haven’t I’m sure you’ve heard people say those things. The doubt has taught me that everyday I must choose: to listen and trust Godโ€™s wordโ€”which is unchanging and faithful, or listen to my feelingsโ€”which waver and are unreliable.

This is what Godโ€™s word says: the Lord is my Shepherd I shall NOT want (Ps. 23:1). Good and upright is the Lordโ€ฆall the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth (Ps. 25:8-10). Every good and perfect gift is from above (James 1:17). Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and feed on His faithfulness (Ps. 37:3). Cast your burden on the Lord and He shall sustain you (Ps. 55:22). No good thing does He withholdย from those who walk uprightly (Psalm 84:11).

So I ask myself: am I trusting His voice? ย Even when He has said “You shall not,” am I resting knowing that His purpose is greater and His plan is FAR better? Choose to dwell on His word and walk in truth today.

Rest and know that Jesus is who He says He is, He is the Good Shepherd. He is good.

โ€œTurn your eyes upon Jesus,
look full in His wonderful face;
and the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
in the light of His glory and grace.โ€
